If you can not physically change the tire yourself and are dependent on roadside assistance than carrying an unmounted spare is your lowest cost option. A mounted spare will be heavier and naturally cost more but you can change the tire yourself if assistance is not available and you are capable of doing the work. Roadside assistance will mount your spare at no cost as part of your subscription.

If you have to buy a tire off the truck it will very likely cost more than if you walk thru the door of the seller and your choice of tire make, model and birthday will be very limited to what they have available on the truck or back at the store.
