I wouldn't trim it...just try to raise it a little by moving it over if there's room. You might need that extra inch or two someday. Until they got it fixed, I wrapped electrical tape around the end of the hose and just held it in the port tight enough to get the flow started by force. Once it got flowing it created a siphon effect enough to get it filled.
