If you unbolt the top or bottom bolts on the shocks and also unbolt the sway bar link the suspension will drop far enough that the spring can be taken out without compressing it.

It's usually safer to take springs out uncompressed when possible. Compressing springs as heavy as on an E450 takes a lot of pressure and if the spring compressor isn't strong enough it could break and really hurt somebody. Bottom line, be vewwy vewwy careful when compressing springs and if you can do the job without compressing them, do it that way.
