You can search around here there are quite a few people who have added spare tire carriers to their units (either by hanging off the hitch or putting it between the frame rails in back).
So far we've been ok for 6 years now without a spare.
With new units Ford offers roadside assistance (and our RV insurance also offers roadside assistance so all we have to do is call a # and wait and wait and wait).
