Electrical glitch?

My current RV is new to me, so I am just noticing a few issues. Everything works great when plugged into 50a shore power. Lights, plugs, A/C, etc. Ditto with the generator. With no shore power, or generator, I can't turn even lights on. The batteries tested at 12.7 v together. ( 2- 6 volts in a series). Now the weird thing is, I can turn on the generator, turn on the lights, then kill the generator, the lights will then continue to run on battery power at that point. Anyone know what is going on?
