Sounds like a really fun trip. Even dropping down to the south there could still be some higher elevations this time of year that could get you in trouble. In the 70's I lived at WSMR outside Las Cruces. The Augustin pass was under 6,000 feet on Rt. 70 between there and Las Cruces but several times between December and February it was snowed in. If you are prepared and check ahead you shouldn't have an issue though. Safe travels.
