yep, but most of us forget that 'other' things are also running on the 120v system at the same time - if you forget to turn off the 'elec' water heater/switch, the 'elec' fridge/switch, or even TVs, receivers, computers, charging devices, etc., you may find that running the AC unit will work for a few minutes, then the outside 120v outlet breaker will trip.
It's not that the 120v outlet, whether 15amp or 20amp, can't handle the AC unit, it's the 'other' items that are stacked on the same run of wiring that overheats the breaker to the point it trips, which is exactly what's it's designed to do.
Also, if you are having to make use of an extension cord, also make sure that it's not too long for the need, and sized large enough to handle the amps you are running thru it. Generally a large thick 'contractor' type extension cord is best.
