They started putting 8k hitches on Axis/Vegas units around 2016+.

They didn't really "beef up the tow rating"; just put higher rated hitches on. The chassis numbers didn't change (other than the occasional E350/E450 swap around).

Just because you have an 8k hitch doesn’t mean you can tow 8k.

GCWR - Actual Weight = Actual towing capacity.

GCWR - GVWR = realistic towing capacity.

It is easy to tow. If we didnt know it was back there...we wouldn't notice it.. Towing a vehicle 4 down, was something new to us...there was a learning curve. All went well. As we have aged as senior citizens...we are contemplating selling our Axis and are beginning to shop for a RPod trailer...or the like...Lance makes a nice small trailer....just to go camping within reasonable distance from home...NO more long hauls in our future...would like to find one which the TJ could tow!

My DW has started thinking that very thing. I’m not quite ready to give up “touring” yet and I never really did enjoy towing a travel trailer but I won’t be surprised if we end up doing this same thing in a couple of years - maybe sooner if SWMBO has her way (which she usually does). We tow a TJ as well and ours is rated to tow 3500lbs so I guess there are quite a few available options to put it in front rather than behind. It’s always interesting!
