driving from Salt Lake City to Cheyenne

Hey:

We are planning a trip from Southern Washington to Upstate New York in the Spring. Thinking late March. Does anybody have experience with I-80 that time of year? Would like to avoid traction device season. We are retired so could push to April. Thanks

Hard if not impossible to tell this far in advance. If leaving from SLC; you have at least one mountain pass that is likely to have residual and perhaps fresh snow in March. Prior to my RV experience, I've encountered mountain snow in the northern Rockies in June. Also seen multiple inches of snow in the Dakota plains into Nebraska in early May.

Weather forecasting has improved immensely over the years - to an extent. Keep a close eye on the 10-day forecast over your route before departure, and plan accordingly. That's about as far out as you can get for a reasonable estimate. If you have flexibility, the 5-day forecast even better.

Good luck and safe travels!

Although rare, we've had a foot of snow in Ohio in April. Last frost is well into May, although I usually de-winterize in early April. Some of the best "woodland" glamping in Ohio and West Virginia is April thru early June. GREAT sleeping weather... but watching for a hard freeze is a must!!

Bottom line... watch a few days ahead of time east of the Rockies for wind patterns shifting to the north. Those spring Canadian air masses can bring some nasty unexpected snow and ice.

Looks like I should buy some Autosocks. Living in the Pacific Northwest we are boxed in with mountain passes. Anybody with experience with driving a DP in that kind of road conditions?
