As stated the latter is not a great mount for bikes.

But then on a travel trailer the rear bumper is a poor choice for
a bolt on trailer hitch also. It is just thin wall square tubing with
cheap mounts.

If you want to use a bike rack it really needs to be adding a true
trailer hitch to the rear with welded bracing to the frame for strength.

I use the ladder bike rack but only put my light Trek on it when I drive solo, and partner is coming with Jeep after work. That way I have my bike. We put our bikes on Jeep, special spare tire rack, when we tow.
I put a noodle around the ladder where rack is, bungee the bike tight and secure. I wouldn’t go too far like that or have more than one light bike, but it works for our purposes.

Cheap bike rack from etrailer installed in the receiver of the toad. We use the ladder for our zero gravity chairs.

So on a trip now with the Swagman. I really dont like the way the hitch holder is a threaded bolt vs a typical holder and pin.

I may get a bolt with a lock nut on it

Do not carry bikes on the ladder. Hopefully these responses have you looking at hitch mounted carriers. I pull a toad on a dolly. My double hitch mount allows me to use a tray carrier for my two bikes and a portable dump tank. I had a local steel fabricator modify the set up to handle the weight and long road trips. Spent $$ to insure safety and peace of mind. I have a separate hanging carrier for the car.

I’ve got an Aero V bike rack that goes in the hitch receiver. When I’m towing my car, I use a double drop receiver so I can do both. The drop receiver is also a 2” or 4” drop, so I can get good toad alignment for the hitch. 4 years and no problems.

Have not used it yet but purchased a Thule rack recommended for motorhome hitch receivers. Bought Roadmaster dual receiver adapter to fit bike rack on top and tow bar for toad on bottom. Would not trust ladder long term.

We have an Allen Sports 4-Bike Hitch Racks for 2 in. Hitch. Originally had it on my Travel Trailer then moved it to our new Motorhome.

Ladder rack

Been using one for 5 years with no problems for 2 adult bikes. You just need to watch placement of the handlebars. I have had to replace the straps once since they weather. I do use a couple of bungi cords to keep movement to a minimum.

We have been using this one on the toad, our Honda CR-V. It holds two bikes and gets them up a little higher.

Bike Rack

I will most likely buy this one from amazon. I have looked at several. They all appear to be the same. This one does state not to us on "trailers", but according to my research, the company feels trailers don't have a 2" receiver and it would bounce a lot due to trailer suspension being different. Well I have a 2" hitch and my suspension is different in a RV than a pull behind trailer.

The ladders are not designed to carry bicycles and you can damage them and the vehicle. I use the Yakima Holdup and the Holdup +2 for 4 bikes or two when you split them. They lock the bikes in by the tire not the frame. Frame hold downs cause damage when the rubber cracks and allow the steal bar to dig into the frame removing the paint. Had two Trek bicycles damaged while returning from FL to OH with one of those.

Sorry to disagree but all 3 bikes we carry on the ladder rack don't weigh as much as me, even if you add the leverage from the ones a foot from the ladder.
My arms are a lot longer so my leverage is much greater.

Only had 1 problem, mounted one with the handle bars lower than the front of our Cherokee
1/2" hole in the jeep.

DO NOT use the ladder for ANYTHING!!!!!!!!! I carried a piece of plywood, about 3' x 3' for a couple hundred miles and it put small cracks in the mount brackets at the bottom of the ladder. I have a hitch mounted bike carrier and that's the way to go!!! Bob

Hollywood RV rack on the toad. It has a 5th wheel no pivot attachment plus a U bolt to really lock it down. Also have a Swagman cover that can't be used when driving the toad since it covers the lights.Click image for larger version
