Bunk above cab on Thor Ace 30.2

We are looking between purchasing the Thor Ace bunkhouse or the Thor class C bunkhouse. We have four kids and I like the look of the ACE better but one concern is can we drive with the bunk above the cab down? I want to be able to put down a mattress pad to make their bed softer but I don't want to have to strip the bedding and find a place to store it every time we hit the road.

I will check tomorrow. I do know that I was not able to lower the cab bed with the slide in. I did not try to return the slide with the bed down. Will try tomorrow and let you know.....

Not a great idea - without the safety pins set, the slide motors will allow the bed to creep down. Could cause a safety issue. We use a thin gel-type mattress pad and leave it on the bed. It fits just fine. Good luck!

Bed needs to be up for traveling... On my Hurricane I wouldn't be able to sit in the drivers seat or see past the cabinets that lower with the bunk...
(Also need to recline the drivers/passengers seat to fully lower the bunk - and that would prevent the slide from coming in...)

Should never be driven without the safety pins in place. There is another thread where some have drilled another location for the safety pins partially down.. This does at least address the bed 'falling' safety issue - but you may find 'timing issues' with the motors... Schwintek (manufacturer of the slide mechanisms used in Thor bunks and slides) recommends full movement every time - not stopping part way. There are videos on Schwintek site and links from here that show how to reset the timing when needed.

we've rarely used our front bunk for actual sleeping, and mostly for storage...

we drilled a hew hole on each side of the rail housing, about 8" down from the factory holes, and now the bunk can ride safely in a lowered and more useful height...
never been an issue in over 50,000 miles of travel...

The Ace is a little different though in that the bed doesn't come all the way down to the seat nor does it block any window space which is why I wondered if it were possible!

There are no safety pins in my overhead bunk on my ACE 30.2 and the bunk will come all the way down with the slide in. I'll go out tomorrow and see if there is enough headroom to sit in the driver's seat with the bunk down.
