as an agent for over two decades, I can tell you that nowadays it's easier to allow the insurance company's website to decipher the exact yr, make, model, and submodel of vehicles versus asking to customer to provide it - sometimes the customer themselves aren't really sure what they have, ESPECIALLY when it comes to different varieties of RVs, Motorcycles, and ATVS... there are just too many different floor plans, variables, extras, submodels, add-ons, etc....
but, I've NEVER heard of any company or insurance agency needing the VIN in order to check if it is stolen... why would they care?
