Until the gas level in your tank reaches the level of the generator pickup tube - generally 1/4 tank.

it's just an engine, run it as long or as little as you like, or need....some run theirs 24/7

I believe it’s been said before on here that the Onan 4000 consumes ~ 1 gal/hr.

doubtful, as even under a FULL load, at the maximum output, it's probably closer to only a 1/2 gallon per hour... my 6000kw doesn't use even that much.

From Onan-Microlite-4000 manual

FUEL CONSUMPTION: Gasoline
No load 0.29 gph (1.1 l/h)
Half load 0.48 gph (1.8 l/h)
Full load 0.71 gph (2.7 l/h)

EDIT: Here is a copy of the manual

Wonder what just charging the batteries and running the fridge is considered. That's all I really use it for and the fridge is in auto so it kicks in by itself (do that to avoid senior moment and forget to reset when under way).

I vote it’s No Load = .29 gal/hr

Depending on how many batteries you have, state of charge, and converter size, and assuming you start generator to charge batteries mostly when low enough that they need it and will accept higher current, I could see power in the range of 1,000 Watts between the converter and fridge. That would make it “about” 1/4 load, requiring “about” 0.4 gallons per hour.

If charging batteries no more than a couple of hours daily from generator, I’d expect gasoline consumption should be about 1 gallon per day or a little less. Not a big number either way.

Onan's manual states the gas consumption:
https://www.electricgeneratorsdirect...G4000_Spec.pdf

QG 4000 model
4KYFA26100 Gasoline 60 3600 4000 120 33.3 1 30 A, 1-pole

Average fuel consumption:
Gasoline No load Half load Full load
60 Hz 4.0 KY 0.3 Gal/h (1.1 L/h) 0.5 Gal/h (1.8 L/h) 0.7 Gal/h (2.7 L/h)

I have gotten similar results when testing.

I have also tested when the generator would shut due to low fuel. The owners manual says about 25% fuel will shut off the generator. I think this is because the generator's fuel hose is inserted into the tank from the top/side and does not touch the bottom. Results will vary, but i tested this once and found that i was at about 10% fuel before the generator shut off. Always something easy and good to test on your own prior to running into this emergency.

hope this helps!

By my testing I found these numbers to be correct. I run my gen once a month under load just to exercise it even when just sitting at home.

You don’t want the generator to suck your tank dry so you can’t get to the nearest gas station. 25% is right. That would leave you enough for 75 miles. 10% would be 30 miles and a bit tight. I’m using Sprinter data for calcs but assume would apply to other classes, bigger tanks but greater consumption.
