Selling by consignment

I was wondering if any one here has had experience with selling an RV through consignment with a dealer?
I was going to list my class A on RV Trader but recently talked with the GM of a dealership about consignment. I'm sure i could make a little more selling it myself vs consignment but a private sale can be a real pain. I would be willing to take a little less on the sale to let someone else deal with it. I asked the GM to e-mail their standard consignment agreement which he said he would do. I want to read it before I take my MH there for him to check out. He made it sound pretty clear cut but..............

RV Trader would have your rig seen by a lot more people...

Most dealers are buying used RVs. The problem is, they want to pay NADA trade-in value. Right now that's about $12,000 less than what i can get on consignment.

And a good number are quacks.

Can’t remember if it was Escapees or FMCA, I think FMCA, did an article about doing a For Sale by Owner on motorhomes. The article went into the potential dangers and what to watch out for.

For members the article should be in the back issue archives.

Bob, very true but consignment seems easier and less hassle. The dealer I am talking with has 0 Class A inventory and is paying premium. The market is crazy right now. If I do this I will get $12,000 above NADA trade in and he will turn around and sell it for $10,000 above that. Crazy.

Absolutely correct. RV Trader is sometimes a hassle. I used the Trader service to sell my motorcycle and it wasn't fun.

Then it sounds like the smart way to go...
Good luck!

Sounds like he is buying from you. That’s not consignment. Consignment they sell it for what they can and take a percentage and then you get the rest.

Yea, that's what I thought at first. He claims that we agree on a number, which we have, then they put it on their lot and try to sell it at a price they want. If they can't get what they need, I take it back. I haven't seen the formal agreement yet so I don't know all the terms. That's why I am asking if anyone has done this.

Look up
Cnc motors
Upland California.

Then reconsider accordingly.

I've sold plenty of things on consignment, including rv's.
It can get very odd, very quickly.
Hold your title and overnight it to them upon release of funds.

I was going to do consignment or sell to a dealer, but said I'd try to sell it on my own for one week.

I cleaned my 2014 top to bottom. Serviced the engine and generator, dewinterized, sanitized, and found a scenic back ground to take lots of pictures.

On Sunday, I grabbed a cup of coffee and wrote a local Craigslist ad. Priced it at low retail ($8k over dealer trade in).

Over 20 contacts in the first two hours. The first looker drove 3 hours one way and wrote me out a deposit check. Today he wired the rest. This weekend he'll pick up the RV.

I say try and sell it yourself.

I have a RV on Consignment and it could be anywhere from 5-10% of the sake price. You can negotiate this since RV market is pretty hot. I prefer this do not deal with issues.

I sold a Class C via RV Trader a while back. Had it for sale locally and no takers. Put it on RV Trader and a guy drove from Georgia to Texas with cash in hand. While it is convenient to sell via consignment, right now with the market so hot, I think I would sell it myself.

Duck, wow, that's crazy. I have a lot more research to do before I go forward with this. Thanks

I sold a very nice Landmark camper on RV trader in three days priced 10k over the other similar units

No issues at all

I went to the bank with the buyer and title in hand, cashed the check prior to handing over the title

If you're gonna purchase a replacement RV (or vehicle) immediately, sometimes it's much better financially & ease of stress to do a trade in & purchase all in the same transaction.

In California, you don't pay sales tax (8-10%) of the agreed-upon value of the trade which is reduced from the new purchase price. That can add up to $6-10,000 based on the value of the trade-in.

So for many, the ease of a no-stress transaction outweighs the "potential" of a few thousand dollars of gain in doing it yourself or having to sue a consignment dealer for payment.
