Which Way to Chattanooga?

Driving our 40 ft Tuscany and towing our car from Spartanburg, SC to Chattanooga, TN. Should I take I26 to Asheville then I40 to I75 to Chattanooga? Or take I85 to Atlanta then I75 to Chattanooga?

Thanks,
Larry

Which ever is shorter. They are both interstate highway routes.

Distance is about the same. Going thru Asheville takes thru the mountains. Going thru Atlanta kind of takes me around them.

We took I-75 from Cincinnati to Chattanooga on our way to Georgia in mid April. It was so rough in spots, I was lucky to not break an axle! Constantly dodging holes on a major interstate is NOT fun, and traffic was awful. Next time I'm sticking to the secondary federal highways going that way.
Good luck & safe travels!

I grew up near Spartanburg and have lived in Knoxville, TN for the past 44 years so know the way to Chattanooga well. From Spartanburg I would take I-85. Try to hit Atlanta between 10 am and 2 pm or go thru on a Sunday.

Incidentally, I have been traveling thru Chattanooga for most of my life and have never been there without hitting some kind of road construction. Currently they are changing the exchange for I-75/I-20.

Chattanooga? Train! Is there any other way??

As far as those routes, I'd probably take the Asheville one for the greater scenic beauty, even if it takes a little longer. Being on the Interstate, the grades won't be horrible.

I live in Lenoir City just West of Knoxville. Grew up just north of Asheville and go back to NC frequently. The drive is gorgeous and easy in a motorhome. Road construction on I26 creates heavy traffic at times but unless you are coming through at rush hour isn't too bad.

I traveled around Atlanta for years and just avoid the area if I can.

Through Asheville is much prettier, but around Atlanta is a much easier drive imo
