We drove West on I40 (Ok,Tx,NM)last week and encountered high cross winds. To add a bit more drama, the wind somehow managed to unroll the slide-out cover on the driver side when passed by large speeding trucks. The cover rolled back up when we stopped but is now rolled up crookedly. I am hoping to get it straightened out but am wondering how to prevent a recurrence. Shouldn't there be some kind of lock when the slide is in?

For the most part it is tension on the rollers and an anti billowing lock that handle the tightness of the topper itself. The anti billowing lock engages the roller when the slide is in to prevent the topper from billowing while driving. The anti billowing lock is that device (actually a plunger) which protrudes from the topper roller and comes into contact with a metal plate on the side of the coach.
Here is the Carefree of Colorado manual for the slide toppers.
