Once upon a time an RVer who had used travel trailers for decades without ever worrying about disinfecting them and never had a "smell" problem bought a Class A rig.

Now being the A cost much more than the TTs he decided to add a whole house filter to the fresh water system, which he successfully did.

A few months later he was camping at a campground in a swampy location and noticed a bad smell while taking a shower. He figured it must have been the well water at this campground. The next trip was to the MIL's house, also on Florida well water, and the smell persisted.

So having been fully educated on the benefits of disinfecting the FW tank and system this RVer did so, including the hot water tank as the bad smell was most prevalent when using the hot water. The smell went away for the next trip, but returned on the following trip.

Several trips were to the MIL's house and the sulphery smelling well water so the RVer assumed that was the source of the smell so he disinfected again and filled the FW tank at home with good quality spring fed city water before their next trip to the MIL's house and decided to not use her well water.

But the smell returned, not as bad as before, but it was still there; not sulphery, but swampy like it was at first and had always been. Putting on his 20/20 hindsight glasses the RVer determined that this smell arrived after installing the whole house filter and wondered if maybe he had a contaminated filter?

So next opportunity at home he went in and unscrewed the filter container to find...................

The filter manufacturer had wrapped the filter installation instructions around the filter cartridge and held it in place with rubber bands. The paper of the instructions was very decayed away and was the source of the problem.

The RVer flushed and sanitized the entire FW system again, installed a new filter element, and has had fresh, clean, non-smelly water ever after.

The End
