I presently tow a 1974 VW Thing behind my Axis. It's great to drive when the weather is nice, but it leaks like a sieve when it rains.
I plan on replacing it with a pre-2015 Honda Fit (both auto and manual can be towed). 2015 and newer Fits have a CVT transmission and can't be flat towed.

We recently purchased a 32 foot Thor Quantum , class C. And, after researching, purchased an automatic 2019 Chevy RS Sonic hatchback. We had camping world install a battery kill button and tow package. We recently towed it from Spartanburg SC to Pigeon Forge, TN. Did great and we love driving it when we aren’t using the motor home.

Hi Spinner,
After 3 Fifth wheels, a year ago we made the change to a 2015 Hurricane 34F and the tow car-a Nissan Versa w/ standard trans. We recently traded for a new toad, a 2019 Chev Equinox LT. We use a Buddy Brake system and it is easy to hook up and take off. There doesn't seem to be many with auto trans. but this works very well for us.

no stopping, no speed 'limit', nothing....all's good...Easy.

I had a 2014 manual transmission Ford Focus that I started to set up as a toad. It is an easy tow - just put it in neutral and go. There isn’t even a steering wheel lock. But it was a good stout job to install the tow bar and the attachment points were very low. I was going to need a 10 inch drop hitch for my class A. I came upon a rather pristine 2004 Jeep Wrangler LJ and changed my plans! Only need a much more reasonable 2 inch drop now and the install was super simple.

We've towed Jeep Cherokees for years, never had a problem. They weigh in at just over 4,000 lbs. and our Sprinter Chassis Citation towed it handily as did the Forest River Forester on the Ford 450 chassis. You need to be sure the model you select has a Trac II transmission or equivalent with an electronic neutral position on the transmission mode selector.

Don't even need to pull the fuse - take it out and leave it out. It's just for the key/transmission interlocks. I removed mine the first time and have never reinstalled it - no loss of any function.

Kia Soul Manual Trans TOAD
I just finished towing a Kia Soul from Charlotte, NC to Phoenix and back with absolutely no problems. It weighs less than 3000 lbs so it did not require a supplemental braking system. effortless to set up and tow with a blue ox tow bar. Just my recommendation.

Second the Jeep Cherokee. We tow a Cherokee Trailhawk. Our ACE tows the Cherokee with no problems. The additional off road capability of the Cherokee makes driving the National Forest’s old logging roads we like to explore easy peasy.

Just an opinion, but I would strongly recommend using toad brakes no matter what you pull. I forgot to turn mine on one time and didn’t notice at first so I can understand the temptation to not bother. And it’s expensive. But in certain situations I can feel the Jeep’s brakes tugging me back. Motor homes don’t stop all that well to begin with and an extra ton or two can’t help. Besides, they are required in many places. The life you save might be your own. Or possibly mine.

The trailer we ordered for our little "tadpole"; was specifically ordered with electric brakes.
I never had much luck with surge brakes.

We have a Class C 2017 Thor Chateau 31L. Our toad is a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk. Only requirements are to shift the transfer case into neutral. Use a Blue Ox tow bar .... hardly now it back there. Need to check it on the road ... turn on the backup camera.
OH yeah in Florida a independent brake system in toad is a requirement

A strong second on the toad brakes. When our brake controller failed on a recent trip, towing the Jeep home without the added safety of the auxiliary brake system left me puckered up all the way home. Hard enough to stop 8 tons of Motorhome in heavy traffic without another 2+ tons of dead weight SUV pushing it along. I do not want to repeat that performance ever!!

I had a Thor Quantum 26 ft E450 ford chassis and now I have a Winnebago 29 VE on F53 chassis, both towed our 2019 Chevy Equinox LT perfectly. It's automatic 4 cylinder with turbo, great power and roomy. It gets between 30 and 35 mpg. Crank it in park, move shift lever to neutral and press start button again and it goes into service mode and you are off ( after connecting tow bar, safety chains and braking system of coarse ).

All Toyota products manuals are automatic have to be trailered. Sold my 5er and Ram together and had a 2017 tundra for daily driver. A $5k custom car hauler was cheaper that buying a new truck are a vehicle that was towable + more insurance + more maintenance.
