They have, they can and they will, if you have illegally modified your vehicle, that affects its safety and that modification, is deemed to have contributed to, caused, or made avoiding an accident impossible. Insurance companies have successfully claimed fraud, and prevailed, as they contractually insure a vehicle as designed, with known safety factors which have been changed without notifying them of their increased risk. You are correct, they can not deny a claim because of stupidity.
