Bill, I have no issues with an iPhone plugged into the connectors on the right bottom of the center console, next to the small open area. This USB supplies power only. The USB connector in the radio (bottom left, under the rubber cover) is for playing music from a thumb drive.
If yours is not working, it is easy to use the included tools in the radio box to pop out the radio and check that the connectors are plugged into the back of the radio.
