If you are reading the 1st version of the manual, the picture is INCORRECT (found out about it when I did my first oil change). You were most likely trying to pull out the "oil filler cap", that's is why it came off when you twisted it.
The dip stick is on the PASENGER Side, next to the Transmission Oil Dip stick.
