Some StarLink engineers did an AMA on Reddit the other day (Ask Me Anything):
https://arstechnica.com/information-...for-data-caps/
A question about mobile did come up and here was part of the answer pertinent to RV'ers:
Quote:
Mobility options—including moving your Starlink to different service addresses (or places that don't even have addresses!)—is coming once we are able to increase our coverage by launching more satellites & rolling out new software.

If they keep launching satellites: at what point does it become a problem for all of the other stuff that's up there?

Good question.
Not just them, there are at least two more internet satellite constellations in the works (OneWeb, and a Chinese company I believe).
On top of that astronomer's have complained about all those satellites flying in telescopes view....
OneWeb is planning 2000+ satellites
StarLink 40,000+ satellites...

Satellites are smaller than cars space is many millions larger than earth and they can be moved as well as self driven. I think we’ll be ok for a couple thousand years. By then communicating made come built in at birth. Lol

I think it's not the size of them: it's their orbit. You have to "thread the needle"; in order to get past them...

Well the Starlink satellites are in low earth orbit as compared to geo-stationary satellites that stay relatively put in reference to a spot on the Earth. How low? 15 minutes last night from launch to deployment of that batch of 60 satellites.

It just a matter of time before Conspiracy theories start with these satellites.

Earth based ASTRnomy is going to be hobbiest territory.
Cheap satellite means cheap wireless telescopes.
Except for vla{very large array} stuff(and I'll betcha a dog turd to a donut starlink lasers are capable of vla) it's all a dying dinosaur.
Why would you want a mirror impacted by humidity which costs 18 million bucks, when $3,000,000 gets you a no impact 24 hour satellite scope with a remote view and not needing to be manned or heated or dehumidified and take days to aim only to be foiled by cloud cover? While starlink is pointing wifi downward, imagine what it can point upward....
Imagine them twisted just right to focus those those 42,000 bits of sunlight wherever they want, focused like a laser or spread out to warm a cloud...or focused on the ass-end of a spaceship needing a boost....
It's an antique thinking process to worry about how jet planes impacted steam driven farm tractors.
Cars displaced horse stables in downtown New York.
Alas Horatio, I lament and wish it to have never ended.
The wifi is a side job at starlink....
People are easy.
I'm fine with it all. I'm just sayin'.
Wake up a bit.
No conspiracy theory. Just a guy who can't pick up a crushed soda can without imagining what it might be good for in a pinch or for a profit.
I can think of a LOT of things to do with 42,000 mega light reflectors....

Ah but it isn't going that way: Yes telescopes on Starlink satellites would give a great view but a 5" telescope on a satellite just gives you the same view a 10" scope on the ground does. With adaptive optics on the ground there is no need for space based scopes. There are currently some very huge ground based scopes being built.
The only spaced based scope going up in any timeframe is the James Webb infrared scope and its really far behind and overbudget (although if it is even remotely successful it will be a huge boon to science).
It is entirely possible with the costs of a ride to orbit falling that more astronomy will be done in space but there has been no indications of that.
All of this is mostly because you really don't do astronomy for profit which means that its limited to universities and government...

So why did they let Arecibo fall apart?

They didn't let it fall apart it just did. They don't know why one of the main support cables failed then while they were researching how to fix it another failed and it became too dangerous to repair.
Even now they are trying to figure out a way to safely decomission it.

If we lose of few of them during their "salvage efforts": will any of us miss them?
