What is causing this on front tires?

There is white showing around part of the tire around the hubcap. Click image for larger version

That just looks like the painted rim to me. Unless there is something else you're looking at that I'm not seeing?

Could it be rubbing on a mud flap?

Are you referring to the white painted edge of the steel wheel that the wheel simulators are attached too?

Yes it is the white between hubcap & tire there are spots of what looks like rust. Thanks. Maybe it is nothing.

Most definitely nothing but a chip in the paint on the steel rims. That pretty shiny thing you see is a hubcap, if you pop it off you'll find the rest of the rim is white also with probably more rust where the claws of the hubcaps have scrapped.
If I were guessing the pretty shiny lug nuts are attached to the hubcaps so don't try to loosen/tighten them, remove the hubcap 1st.

No. First check for a couple dimpled lug nut covers. If any have dimples or slots the screw on to hold the simulator in place. You may have received a T handle socket wrench for that purpose.

As Dave said - these are NOT hubcaps - they are wheel simulators and held on by 2 or 3 fake lugnuts that unscrew to allow removal of the wheel simulator. The other chrome "lugnuts" don't unscrew. The real wheel lugnuts are under the wheel simulator.

what about wheel simulator caps...

I wish you could have seen my face the first time I learned what that T wrench removal tool was for and actually pulled one of those hub caps (oops wheel simulator). About two months ago I had to remove one wheel simulator (new term for me) from one rear dually because the RV repair shop that was supposed to be a Sumo Spring Authorized Installer did not align my extender correctly; so I could not access it to add air It was 1st time I took my RV anywhere other than the Winnebago Dealer for anything. When I told the repair shop about the problem, it seemed like it was going to hassle for them; so I figured out how to jack it up, remove that simulated wheel thingy, remove the outside tire to realign, and put it all back together I felt better with what I had did and learned than if repair shop had said "no problem bring it in and we will fix"

If it covers the hub (and it does): the term "hubcap" is still accurate...

I think you are right. I Googled it and the Internet has never been wrong

According to Hubcap Haven, they offer the below definition as both can be correct. On a side note a set of 4 simulators/hubcaps is a lot cheaper than I would have thought. Guess what may make my 3 years want list to spend from my Self Warranty Repair funds if funds remain unused & available

Simulators and wheel cover are just hubcaps with a better Ad Agency behind them.

Actually no. Hubcaps did not cover the entire wheel. They only covered the front and rear hubs and lug nuts. Best known hub caps are Baby Moons used on Chrome wheels and the hub caps for the Chevy rally wheels used on 60s and 70s Corvettes and Camaros.

Be careful with the wheel simulators. If you take them on/off too many times, they become loose and fall off while driving. I lost one on the freeway and never saw it come off or roll down the freeway. Hopefully it did not hit another vehicle behind me. I have now added zip ties to help hold them onto the wheels. That one wheel simulator cost me almost $100 to replace it.

If it Bugs You

If part of that rim showing bugs you there are two things you can do about it.

1. clean the rust off the rims edge then paint them silver.

2. buy Alcoa Aluminum rims, end of problem forever.
