Removing Material in a Tight Space

Before I start hacking away at this, I was wondering if someone has (or has thought of) a more intelligent way to accomplish the task.

I need to remove the portion of stringer marked by the red arrows to accommodate a 1-1/4 hole (yellow circle) for an ongoing project.

A jig saw won't reach because of the tank. The space is too tight for a traditional saws all. I have a hammer and chisel and plan on using a drill-attached hole saw to drill the needed hole that's 1" deep. It's one of those saws that attaches to a drill used to drill door knob holes.

Is there a better way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

How about a hole-saw on a bunch of strung-together extensions?

That's close and all I would have needed was a longer start bit to get it up off the floor more to get started. Unfortunately, it has a fitting to keep the saw part from slipping if it runs into a tough spot, so I'm stuck with what's there. Thanks for the feedback/idea though.

Using an oscillating multi-tool with a saw bit will make short work of the parts of the stringers you need to remove. This is a perfect case for getting the cheap Harbor Freight multi-tool for $20.

I have access to one of those. Thanks for the tip.

I think I have this figured out. Step 1 is done.

This place is awesome.

It's part of a larger goal. Inverter for this part. Solar the goal. After 2 weeks off grid in Montana and 3 weeks afterward, it's not just a fad - it's a goal. The 'hole' will accommodate 2-4AWG cables to the battery box containing 4 100AH BB lithium batts and, eventually, solar panel cables for the control board to support it.

Lesson Learned

I used a 1" boring bit to get enough material removed to free it with a screwdriver (had a staple in it).

Quick word of advice: if you plan on drilling through the floor, procure a flooring diagram from Thor. You'd be surprised by the amount of bracing there is under that plywood

I will start anew tomorrow, diagram in hand.
