Upgrading the main bed in a 2015 Thor Axis 25.2

Group,

I have found the main bed in my (new to me) 2015 Thor Axis 25.2 fairly uncomfortable mainly because of the uneven nature of the reconfigurable base upon which it rests. Its designed so that a secondary seating area can be configured once the bed is removed in the rear cabin of the vehicle. I'm seriously considering rebuilding that whole area to be a permanent bed areas. Has anyone done this before that could offer some pointers? Can you even get a sheet of plywood into the vehicle? Is there a type of building material that is flexible enough to get in through the door for a retrofit? Has anyone replaced the mattress with one they find comfortable? Right now it has three mattress toppers stacked on each other to attempt to make it comfortable that are just not doing the job. Uneven support, high spots and low spots are the problem. I would like to build a new permanent bedding platform and replace the mattress. Does temperpedic make anything that would fit back there?

Our bed is on a slide. We went through the same process... Tried several mattress toppers and nothing was good enough. After spending a month in the RV, we went out and bought a Sleep Number R3 bed from camping world. I was a bit worried that it's essentially an air mattress, but it doesn't even feel like an air mattress. It's a mix of padding and air chambers. You have to put it together. Each side is adjustable and it is very comfortable. When it's time to pull in the slide, I set both sides to 15 and take most of the air out of the bed. When extended, I place two pillows under the foot of the bed since the slide base is a few inches higher.

They also have the R5 version, but I couldn't find enough of a difference to justify the extra cost. I believe the R5 adds another layer of padding. I was also concerned too much padding would mean it wouldn't be as flexible.

We have a Tempur-Pedic at home. Best purchase we've ever made. Unfortunately, their beds didn't work for our situation in the RV. The sleep number is a close second. I'm sure their home versions are just as good, if not better than Tempur-Pedic.
