Yes. Banks often put a $1 charge on the card on the initial swipe to verify the cards legitimacy. Once the purchase is completed the actual amount of the purchase is charged to the account and the hold is reversed. The banks are allowed to "hold" for 24 hours. This happens with credit cards as well but you don't see it like you do on your debit card.

# 1 rule of debit cards is:
Don't use them to buy gas. No protection for you if skimmed.

You actually do have protection on your debit card. The problem is they already have your money and you have to get it back. On credit cards, you use the providers money until you pay the bill so it's easier to deal with a theft and your money is not tied up.
I rarely use my debit card when traveling.

Sure, but you card gets skimmed, hundreds (or thousands) of dollars are removed from your account, you spend weeks trying to get the money back in your account.
Some banks are better than others in the recovery process.
It's so much easier to deny the charge with a credit card and never lose control of your money.

Yes, I gave up on the debit card usage, even in the city where I live with the limited ATM locations that I actually used it. Happened to me twice in one year. Really a pain in the backside so no more...

I normally fuel up (diesel) on the truckstop side, so doesn't take much more time than filling an 18 wheeler.
And I get from 7 to 8+ mpg depending on my lead foot, so only have to fuel every few days if traveling.

They raised it for my card only. The rest all stayed the same. Negotiations are cool !
I ran into a similar issue years ago while traveling on my Harley. I have to stop every 120 miles for gas and was on a long trip, third time I pulled in to get gas in the same day, my card was declined. I called the CC company and asked what was going on and they said it was a fraud deterrent, since it had been used so many times in one day. I told them I appreciate it but I wanted it removed because I don't want to HAVE to call when it happens again. I use my CC a LOT and I pay it off regularly so it wasn't a problem and they did as I asked. As far as the MH and fill ups, I try to use Pilot/Flying J because they don't have limits but if a station does, I just swipe it again, no biggie. Only thing that irritates me is, a lot of times mine will hold over $100 but not much, depending on how far I run it down, so when I swipe again and it holds less than $10 worth, it seems like a nuisance. I know I could just stop at the $100 limit but I just HAVE to know it's slam full before I take off again....you never know when that extra 3-4 gallons may come in handy!

EASY! Stop sooner, say at a 1/2 tank! Cost less, no hassle!

It's the credit card companies that set the limits.

Along these lines, I see the Gas Buddy app now offers a card that gives you 5c off every gallon, and clears through your bank. Has anybody here tried that?

Limits vary by card type (if business is wanting the fraud guarantee from the card provider)... AMEX tends to be higher than MC/Visa... Worked well for me when Costco used AMEX with 5% back...
You can also go inside and 'prepay' with card to any amount you want... If you end up under, go back in and they will refund/credit difference.
Typically my cards will allow 2 swipes.... The third if needed (thankfully not often, but when gas was at/near $4) typically rejected and needed another card.
Have occasionally had to answer 'fraud alert' texts, then reprocess too.
I rarely if ever use debit for purchases... And never at a gas pump.
Protected transaction, yes... PIA if skimmed/fraud, most definitely.

Not sure where you got your information regarding debit card purchases but in the past on 2 different occasions, I had unauthorized charges on my debit card that were refunded once I told my bank. Took a couple of days.

Too many variables to cover all card issurers/merchants, etc. Just learn to expect it. I used to have 95gal capacity and this happened a lot. It is a hassle, but not the end of the world. Lots of times, if you go inside and talk to the clerk, you can get the ok to fill over the limit. But you don't know unless its posted on the pump.
Better things to worry about, like--running low on beer in a dry county.

That's why I use the Garmin RV 700 Gps. Once you put your preferences in, it will route you around dry counties so I would never have that problem.

In Heaven there is no beer,
That’s why we drink it here.
And when we depart from here,
Our friends will be drinkin all our beer.

I sometimes fill my car up at the AAFES gas station at the Air Force Base near my home. Once you swipe your card and get approval, the pump says you can pump up to 30 gallons. I asked the store nanager about why that was and ge said it is a state regulation and is a safety measure to keep people from leaving it unattended and spilling lots of gas if the auto shutoff doesn't work. He told me to just swipe a second time and I can get up to another 30 gallons. I think he gave me bad info, though, because I fill up regularly at stations all over the state and have not seen that limit any place else. In fact, I have put 65 gallons in my motorhome at a station about five miles from him.
