Exactly. Cell phone should cover most places, but we have driven through many isolated areas out west without coverage (from our carrier anyway — others may be better). Risk of having a tire problem in a no-coverage-area is no doubt very low but exists nonetheless.
My personal experience with a tire separation on a rental unit years ago is that getting through on the phone was the easy part, but having someone show up on a timely basis are two different things. Traveling along the east coast is one thing, but there are areas where there’s not much for 100 miles. You may be waiting a while even if you get through on phone.
I’m also not as comfortable that getting help late in day, or through the night, would be as easy as during normal work hours, particularly in isolated areas.
Obviously, if rig is large or you can’t change the tire yourself for other reasons, then the value of a spare and tools is somewhat less. We are all different, and what works for one may not be great for another.
