I use Drive Weather. Enter dater of travel start time origin and destination and get the complete forecast for the route. You can play with dates and times to determine when the best travel times are for your weather tolerance.

Apps for phones? Nice but I always bring a standalone GPS on trips. A RV GPS is even better (I have a Garmin RV GPS).
I do not consider a cell phone "gps" reliable enough to solely depend on, ever.

How did we ever get from point A to point B in our old motorhomes without a GPS?

The nice thing about a GPS is you don’t need cell service, that’s one of the main reasons why I got one. It will work off of my cell’s data but it doesn’t need it.

Tell that to the folks lost in in Nevada. One of them ended up dying.

Give me the chance to use real live
Rocket science
and I will.
Almost every map app in the world can be used offline without cell service.
Any cell phone, inactivated without a SIM card But with a map app installed is indeed a stand alone GPS. The $20 cell phone Often using the exact software as the $600 rv standalone unit(same with a $99 10"screen tablet)
Allow me to know how an up-to-the-second warning from a map has value, and I'll know it(with data service provided by data or Wi-Fi.)
We skirted around a 45 minute delay today on i40 solely because of the red lines on Google maps.
And I dropped a pin as we passed where the guy driving said there was an old bridge crossing the padre Canyon at twin arrows. The next time I'm in the area a proximity alarm will remind me to check it out.
And we checked to see if a known dirt road was now paved by looking at google maps. It was. We did.
These are not paper-map things.
And
Take a look at
Life360
It's an app which allows you track a cell phone.
It negates the 'where are you' calls.
GENERALLY, my wife and I can track each other down to where we are sitting in the living room.
Maybe someone's life could be saved.
Each dot is a time stamp.
Forsaking any tool for the sake of forsaking
Isn't exactly the best way to not die.
Have at least two forms of finding. There Isn't a single reason in the world not to.

You can nearly predict weather patterns with it - especially temperature changes - at least where I live. Southeast/South breezes... warm. North/Northwest breezes... cool to cold.
It's especially handy driving east/west through the flat plains states. You can see ahead of time if strong crosswinds are predicted.

Or stubborn. No matter how you navigate in the end it needs to pass the common sense test. If it doesn’t look right it probably isn’t.

Having a mobile phone/cell service with working mapping app is good.
Also having a GPS receiver with satellite reception is better.
Having a copilot who knows how to read legacy paper maps... PRICELESS!!
One is None.
Two is One.
A competent copilot - everything you ever dreamed about!

i love life 360 ...
been using for years ..
allows me to track the kids (unless they turn it off or battery dies) and allows me to see if my wife is on her way home....
also tracks how fast they where going ....nice to yell at the boyfriends or etc if they where driving little fast....

TWO GPS's Are Better Than One
I learned a long time ago to use two GPS at the same time. Directions may differ but the maps are usually the same so then I decide.

The above link is the story of how to do it all wrong.
Mapqwest printed map multiplied by extreme silliness.
Interviews, video, facts as relayed from the survivor.
No need for us to guess.
A harsh bit of life I'm about to say:
If you're not smart enough to pull the spare tire off of your vehicle and set it on fire as a distress signal, then your other tires as you need, I'm not sure you're smart enough to operate a vehicle amongst normal folks.
He's dead. she's ruined.
Ours is not a time to say probrecita.
It's a time to really really really review your abilities and decide if you're truly truly truly able to proceed in traffic, in life, in daily decision making of decisions you've never had to make before.
If one percent of active members here aren't able and need to admit it...that's a dozen of us.

Six navigation aids
1. Road signs are seldom wrong.
2. Paper maps are only as good as the publisher at the date of last printing. The don't scroll well, so they are always folded wrong.
3. A magnetic compass might point you in the right direction.
4. The GPS device integrated into your vehicle, or a stand-alone GPS device, does not need Internet service, but it is only as good as the last map update.
5. The Maps app in your smart phone has the advantage of always being up to date if you are connected to the Internet. By downloading "offline maps" in advance, you can get around the Internet requirement, but then your maps are only as good as the last download. See #4.
6. Your own good common sense.
All six of the above are just tools to help you make smart decisions.
Artificial intelligence can help you plan a route, but there is no substitute for liberal use of #6.

I saw that video. What a tragedy. Thanks for sharing.

I doubt many of us did it as decrepit old goofs drivng 15mph under the speed limit in a vehicle the size of a motorhome.
We did it as a normal among normals.
(And we used the best tool at hand, which was the MOST CURRENT MAP YOU COULD BUY. We sure didn't tackle 66 with a National Trails map, then later we didn't tackle 40 with a 66 map. Why won't some use the best tools now?)
And now we're different and either blindly living in the past or just too vapid to be aware of our limitations.
It's not Then
and we're not the
Them you remember.
One of the funny things on youtube is the 40lbs heavier and 40years older people trying to do the backflips they did when they were 15.
We're boobies now. We were flocking sparrows but we remember ourselves as kestrels.
The man is dead due to his own absurd decisions..
Take hearty note.
Apply.
Let him live on in our diligence.
He lives in mine.
