Trip Planner / GPS / Route Restrictions

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good app, web site, or navigation device for planning a trip that shows road restrictions and clearances?

Five years ago, switched from using Garmin to a free Rand McNally on my iPad. Rand quit updating for Apple iOS on iPad and iPhone, so bought the standalone Rand 7735 a year or so ago. Rand once again did not have computer software updates when iOS updated, except if I called, then they sent me a micro-card. That was a hassle. Sold to a fellow RVer in Florida who uses Rand McNally and Windows computers.
Recently bought the Garmin RV 760LMT and am very glad to be back with Garmin. Bought a refurbished one. Doesn't quite have as many bells & whistles as the previous Rand McNally, but totally stable, upgradable, and it's my 4th Garmin over the years.
I do check all routes against Apple or Google maps and also use the free Rand McNally Atlas app on my iPad distributed by Apple at the apps store. Great for an overall perspective.
and, I use RoadTrippers for after I've figured out miles I go in a day, and want to see "what to do" at each stop. That's a fun part of the planning by computer/apps. It's all fun.
Guess you could say that I love mapping and maps. ~debbie

This topic needs to be a sticky as it is a frequent question.

Travel app

I used Allstays app I found it so helpful. It's a pay app, but worth it! Height restrictions, grades, stores, gas stations, all kinds of campgrounds, etc.

Seamama61 - we use Allstays app as well. It's a great source of pertinent information.

Rand McNally motor carriers atlas to check clearances about $20 at a truck stop & Google maps free on my phone. Traveling 9+ years fulltime & no problems. I use rvparkreviews site to find rv parks.

We have used a Rand RV GPS for several years (free updates). You enter you length, height, weight, and other parameters so it routes you generally on designated routes. I even use it to track my mpg. The Truckers Atlas is also a good tool as stated above. I consult it for mainly low clearances in a state prior to travel there. Mine is a few years old but cost around $40 in a truck stop.

Bought this unit, Magellan RoadMate RV9165T-LM, for $170 from
Factory Outlet Store | Online Shopping | Online Outlet Store and so far works pretty good. I was considering replacing the head unit with one that has an integrated GPS but over time, that turns out to be a "gotcha" cause of end of life, end of sale and no upgrades available.

Another fan of the Garmin 760 here traveled over 5000miles thru 19 states with no problem. I relied on my Garmin and it never let me down even thru large cities

I figure the more it's brought up, the more likely google maps will hit it again and again in their data mining efforts....and hopefully add the feature to their android phone maps

Google, we need maps to route for weight and size restrictions!

The Garmin works great for us, supplemented by a spiral bound Rand McNally road atlas. We plan our trips in advance with RVTripWizard to find routes, places to stay and points of interest.

The Garmins are great units... but Magellan also has one that'll let you know if your fig will "fit"...

Garmin 660 & 770

What does the standard power cable for these units look like? The BC-30 Backup Camera has a replacement power cable that has an in-line receiver for the camera module that also includes a traffic receiver. I've decided not to buy the camera for this reason as the receiver is only inches for the back of the GPS unit and would lay on your dashboard. Now I'm wondering if the GPS itself has a similar traffic receiver.

I'm planning on using the GPS in my auto as well as the RV. I don't need the camera for the Vegas, obviously, and I can live without it in the car. But if the GPS has a similar traffic brick, I will have to look at other GPS units.

That looks interesting... but I wonder if you can customize it to handle RV characteristics so you don't get routed under low overpasses, narrow roads, small bridges, etc.
