2016 24.1 carpet??

I've searched through multiple threads and could not get to an answer... What is under the carpet in the front of a 2016 24.1, anyone know? And if you have removed the carpet, how did you do so? Is it glued? I am guessing you need to remove the chairs to get a clear path to either replace the carpet or lay more linoleum? Thanks any input is appreciated.

Generically there will be OBS/plywood under the carpet. In some cases where the carpet butts up against a sheet vinyl the sheet vinyl may go under the carpet a ways. I've heard where the sheet vinyl is under all carpet in some applications.

Bad part, the carpet is very likely stapled with close to a thousand staples per square foot. So if the goal is to get rid of worn carpet and replace or hopefully use the existing possible sheet vinyl, you won't be satisfied with that. Remember the flooring including any carpet and sheet vinyl is installed first and all walls, cabinets, tables, etc. are put on top of it. A doable situation but difficult with the small spaces, odd corners, and non-standard building practices in RVs.

I believe that 2016 Vegas/Axis is that last year of carpeting
Beginning in 2017 it is wall to wall vinyl

As replied above, under carpet is OBS/Plywood
If there are staples, they can be easily removed so you can replace with sheet vinyl
I have also seen vinyl plank flooring installed by one RV owner on this Forum

What is "OBS"?

I'm thinking a typo for OSB but in two different posts from two different posters?

Most likely just misquoting an acronym. Probably referring to Oriented Strand Board... OSB. Same as when referring to concrete as "cement"... not knowing that cement is just the binder in concrete...

Keypunch error…

Oriented Strand Board is a widely used, versatile structural wood panel. Manufactured from waterproof heat-cured adhesives and rectangularly shaped wood strands that are arranged in cross-oriented layers, OSB is an engineered wood panel that shares many of the strength and performance characteristics of plywood.

Yep and OSB and OBS don't have good binders in them when they get wet.

And don't you need to put plywood on top if you plan to glue on flooring as the OSB does not take glue?

I just replaced some damaged flooring in my GF's Crusader 5th wheel. Leak damage in the bath and it had OSB with sheet vinyl glued down.

Thank you!

Thanks for all the great insight. At least now I know what I am up against, the raw OSB. The 2016 Vegas has only carpet in cab area and on the upside of the steps. So hopefully the walls will be a minimal issue. My plan is to pull a seat and take it to a boat shop to get a quote for recover of the worn vinyl and at the same time eval how to get the shag carpet out.

Really shag in an RV? Who thought that design element was practical for a travel vehicle.

It was cheap which is why it was put in.

Is that true OSB doe not take glue? Didn't seem right unless you tore the osb apart from carpet removed?

OSB is used by most RV manufacturers and they glue the sheet vinyl to it. The OSB is made sometimes in extra long lengths so the floor is a seamless flooring. You can research articles about that and see statements that even OSB manufacturers don't recommend gluing sheet vinyl/linoleum to OSB, because that's considered a cost cutting procedure. BUT RV manufacturers, especially those who tout the "entry level RV" cost cut on everything. Best option is obviously a finished plywood underlayment such as sanded A-C plywood but now you have an underlayment that exceed the building quality of the rest of the RV. Why bother.

Sticking with OSB, just wondered how much may be glued. My DH will kill me if I pull the carpet and create more work, but it is just so ugly and stained.

I replaced the floor in my 2017 Axis when I did the cabinet remodel, the vinyl is just laying on the wood underneath, no glue or staples, I had a piece of the left over carpet for my home living room sewn with an edge all around and put it down in the front area, pulled up both seats and put them back down on top of the carpet.

I have also a 2016 24.1, and with the help of my son we did remove the old (shag) carpet. I confirm it is a plywood under and yes we did remove the seats.
You would have the remove also the 2 side consoles. The hard part is in the front under the dash and all around the motor cab.
if I would have to do it again, I would really look into vinyl planks as ex. 3 x 12"" planks, ,I think it would be easier that laying down a carpet or linoleum because of the many measures to fit. Good luck
