Any recommendations on a vent shade?

I'm one of those people that has to have a pitch-black room to sleep and I'm looking for ideas for a shade (black-out shade) over the roof vent. That vent is like spot light.

I'm not real keen on having to use a screen with Velcro where I have to completely remove it when I want light/air or have half of it hanging down. I'd like to find something that perhaps I could slide open of close, like a window shade and was wondering what others went with.

I see camping world has this, but it looks like it would still let a lot of light in.

Anyone?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not real keen on that idea as I don't want to be having to put something in the vent or taking it out...and if you take it out, then I have to find a place for the pillow. Clutter in an RV is something I really try to avoid.

I'd also like to find a pull-down black-out shade for the back window. Anyone do this?

Maybe combine the vent shade and a black Maxx Air vent cover. That may do the trick. We have the black vent covers on both our Montana 5th wheel and Vegas. They greatly reduced the amount of light coming in through the vents.

I think you found a vent shade cover from etrailer. Our Maxx Air has open / close so when you close it, it blocks what little light may come through. But that is a design of the entire unit. We never have to worry about water or rains either.

On a pull down shade, I recommend MCD.

It is not 100% sealed, but it is pitch dark in RV at night when all shades are down. I actually had problem the other way, where we installed 12vc dimmers on most of the switches so at night we have a little light i.e. main cabin & restroom. Before the only light we could see was clock on microwave or green LED on Norcold.

Note: You can see one of the slider dimmer switches over the bed, it controls the two lights. Before it would either be too Bright or too Dark for us.

The majority of time, I have my vent cover open...but adding a black cover would help. I'm perplexed as to why these shades don't offer blackout fabric.

I like the MaxxAir roof vent for the reasons you state, but over 300 dollars?? Yikes!

Not sure a $300+ replacement vent would produce the desired results. A black cover for $80ish (probably shop around and find cheaper) and the interior shade you showed would probably work.

The Maxx Air covers are a must in the PNW and went black as they reduce light entering through vent, reduce interior heat and allow ventilation year round.

Yes that is Maxx Air with thermostat and remote Look for the Maxx Air Fan Vent Plus. There are 3 of the Model 3800s on my coach, but I believe over past few years it has been replaced by a 3801? The 3801 has a bunch of LEDs. I can't speak to that; but I have heard of some complaints that the LEDs burn out? (let some folks tell... Thor must make the LEDs )

It could also be that the 3800 Model is specific to Winnebago? I have seen some common parts with a unique part number for Winnebago; so you can search all day and never find it unless searching online with Winnebago part number for your coach, or at authorized dealers.

For reference; the Winnebago Part Number is 318982-01-CHT. But for $127 you might just try one of the 3801s and not worry about LED lights. https://www.etrailer.com/RV-Vents-an...A00-03801.html

Good luck

Update: FWIW my covers are white, never ever noticed light coming through our Maxx Airs. By contrast the Skylight / Cover over the shower is dark black, and it is the 1st thing that get bright every morning and almost enough to see at night inside RV if the moon and stars are out.

I really didn't want to replace the vent itself...dealing with the caulking and all...but your idea sent me in another direction. Check this out...27 bucks.

I've put one of those over every vent in every RV I've ever owned. I have a spare one now (and spare vent) since I replaced the vent in the bedroom with an A/C. No light problem there.

Bingo. $27 and the shade you found...think that would solve the problem.

This alone may do the trick!

This one by Maxxair has more of an overhang.

All a matter or need and different views of ;perspective. For us because we have the open and close slider switch inside the RV, it shuts down what little light that may come through the cover, it is prolly why the color is irrelevant for our design. You will hear me say, "Quality is fitness for use".

I have ordered the MaxxAir vent from Amazon and I think I will try that first. If that doesn't darken the room enough, then perhaps I'll also install the shade screen.

It won't. Removes a lot of light but when the sun comes up, you'll know it. Just ask my wife.

What's her phone number?

I would think that it being black and on top of the existing vent it would make a huge difference. Certainly going to be better than what I have.
