I'm usually against new federal laws, but by making the penalty universal (like mail theft) you avoid the small town corruption involving payola to local politicians.
If they can clear $50 / cat, they bringing in 75k/month $900k / year That is small time shop.

Do you think they needed all that used army stuff to find those converters? The sheriff was probably pretty excited to have the Delta Force, Jack Reacher, and Jack Ryan on his team!

I just went to my R V storage facility to wipe it down and as usual I started up the engine to charge up the battery. As soon as it started up, I discovered that someone had cut off my catalytic converter. This is a 2022 Miramar 37.1. I went to the storage facility office and found out that 3 other coaches had the same thing happen between 08/06 - 08/10. Police reports were taken on those thefts. I had been at my coach on 08/10 and I know it was fine since I always start it up whenever I go there. So sometime between 08/10 and today, they struck again. This facility has block walls and chain link fences around it with automatic gates(entry/exit) requiring a key card. The staff told me that they have video of how the suspect(s) were able to gain entry and have a license plate. This is the 2nd time I have had an issue with some form of vandalism inside this facility since the end of March of this year.

Looks like I will be moving to another facility. I am looking at one that offers indoor storage with valet service. They also offer electrical hook ups to keep the batteries charged for an additional fee. The facility is closer to my house and I plan on visiting it tomorrow. I filed a claim on my insurance for the damages. I now need to find out if I can drive it to a repair facility or will it damage other parts of the emissions system. I believe Ford offers towing for the first 5 years or I can use my AAA R V for towing if needed. I have a Ford dealership that works on R V's near my house in Yorba Linda Ca.

This just makes me mad. But before rant, let me say I am sorry to hear of the thefts.

I have a fellow Winnebago owner that has had his Cat stolen twice in one year. Both times at the same facility that claims to have impeccable security. He is looking to move to indoor site. His 1st claim was 2,500 and the most recent was $4,000; same repair facility. Last I heard he was not sure if Insurance was going to cover the entire $4,000? He installed the 7' Catstrap this time.

In your case, I would be mad at the Storage facility if they did not advise all of the tenants of thefts 8/6 - 8/10. Nothing else; it would have helped to have more diligence and eyes looking. Then again as far as we know some of these storage facilities owners may be involved with kickbacks?

I need to check to see if there are any published updates on the effectiveness of the new law in Indiana?

I was considering the catstrap installation but they only sell 7' normal, or 12' diesels. The 7' seems too short for me? I think I need at least 8' but would prefer 9'. I have tried calling and emailing the Mfg a few months now; but they never respond.

My RV is parked at home and my Cat is painted Orange with Serial number on it. I have painted it twice now as the bright orange / red color is only good about a year despite it's 2000F high temp rating.

I agree with you in that the storage facility should have notified all of the owners of the thefts. The other thing that bothers me is that when the original thefts occurred between 8/6 thru 8/10, they saw HOW they were getting into the facility and have not corrected that issue. At least if that was corrected, it would make it harder to gain entrance again. Having someone there overnight does not seem to be working since they have struck again. I am looking at relocating to another facility who shows that they have indoor parking. Hopefully I can get into their facility. The drawback is that they have to drive it into and out of the facility and you need to give them a one day advanced notice to pull it out. They do offer electrical hook ups for an additional fee. I plan on looking at what they offer tomorrow. The new place is a lot closer to me.

New law in Mississippi is even stronger than one in Indiana went into effect July 2022

Must have ID and VIN to sell cat converter and must get paid by check.

But Indiana seems to be the most actively fighting. They just started this free painting of Cat converters this week.

Here is before/after of mine painted last month ( for the 2nd time as paint was fading color)

I am sorry this happened. It really has gotten out of control! It happened to me and I moved to a more secure storage yard though still outdoors. For what it’s worth I have a new in the box Catstrap bundle (Catstrap plus the directional motion activated, under vehicle, remote controlled siren) for sale for $110 INCLUDING shipping to the lower 48 states. I decided not to install it and have since sold my class A. Downsized to a class B that seems to have a much smaller risk. PayPal and it’s on its way tomorrow.

I am gonna PM you, I will take that Catstrap Bundle off your hands since I know you a Winnebago guy again

I may sit on it for a while too, but if I ever find someone to install I will have it ready to go. I can't wait on the new Cat laws to come to Texas.

I dropped off my Miramar at my local Ford Dealership(they also work on motor homes) for them to install the new Catalytic Converter, 02 sensor and related parts. They are installing the Cat Clamp Converter Cage on my new converter to help deter any more thefts. It has a large collar that goes on each end with stainless steel cables that weave through it and all around the converter and steel frame of the coach. Total cost including labor on the Cat Clamp is $459.00. I was told it would take about an hour to cut through the cables to remove the converter. If I didn't use my insurance for the converter replacement, it would cost $3500.00. Lucky I only have to pay my deductible. I am also planning on spray painting the converter and adding my vehicle vin number to it.

My New Catstrap Installation

So I decided to not wait on Texas to follow suit with New Catalytic Laws that relate to Stolen Catalytic Converters; so I installed my own deterrent solution. I did all of the labor taking my time off/on over a week or two.

What I have....

1. Cateye (130 db siren that is controlled by a controller that is secure in battery compartment that thief has no access to.
2. 7' Catstrap ( I ran it across the bottom and back side of converter)
3. 3' Catstrap ( I ran it across the top of converter so a thief would have to make two cuts on both necks. (Not a standard part, but I worked directly with Catstrap who were nothing but awesome to work with. They were helpful to ensure I was getting a solution I wanted. Buy the 10' catstrap and you can do what I did.
4. Six 3" Exhaust clamps & two 4" Exhaust clamps (Note: this for two Catstraps)

The siren has yet to generate a false alarm. I can walk all around it trying to make the alarm trigger; but it won't, I roll under and it goes off, even made me bump my head once; when I forgot the alarm was on. I was trying to get under to tighten a few nuts

So I no longer need to worry about keeping painting on the converter up. It is also a nice touch that when you go somewhere and you activate the alarm, the chirp tells everyone within ear range that this RV has a Security System It does not chirp when you deactivate it; so they never know if you have turned off.

Not sure how you figure parking a 1988 Mossberg car in the driveway will serve as adequate deterrent

When I finished this job, I called Progressive to crow about what I have done in hopes I might be get some type of Theft deterrent break In fact the agent seemed taken back that I was willing to spend time and money on this system... He cited that I only have a $250 deductible; so why should I be worried about a theft as they will replace

That is NOT a Wow; perhaps a merger of cost of business & lifestyle given you sport a Mossberg 88

I would have thought my deductible was $500 (maybe $1,000); but I am sure it is related to loyalty status and disappearing deductibles? So learning it is actually $250 was quite the surprise. I have 3 years with RV & no claims ( one windshield though; but not sure if they ever filed it as a claim given how long it took?) But I have Boat and Motorcycles with Progressive for 25 plus years and no claims. But this is why I wanted the Catstrap Bundle system, I try to protect my stuff with cameras / locks etc.

I will be honest I was on the fence and had a little help / incentive to get this system, but now that I have it; I feel foolish for not buying it outright a year ago.

FWIW, my rate has dropped about 70% since I bought new? Dropped about 30% after 1st year and another 30% or so the 2nd year. Renewal is coming up. I need the triple double.

I’m looking at getting a Catstrap. I see they make a kit specially for the F-53 chassis. It has two 5 foot straps instead of one longer strap. Apparently, the F-53 has two cats? Getting ready to head to our storage lot to take a look under my Challenger before ordering.
