Wheel Bearings

Today we had our badly worn brakes and rotors installed.Driving home we heard a very loud squeal and then smelled hot rubber. We called international garage who installed the breaks. The tech said one of the bearing was bad, the bearing looked might have damaged the new seal the oil leaked out of it. Should they have not checked the bearings too? We had to be towed.

YES! He did check and determined it was bad. And then...? Document everything, threaten small claims and then follow through.

If he later tells you yes, you had a bad bearing, then he bad for not telling you then!

I, always re-pack the bearings & new seals installed at every front brake pad change. It's the most opportune time to get to them because calipers and rotors need removed to get to them.

Doesn't sound right

New seal and oil?

Poor mechanic or improper installation

They’ll probably will try to make us pay, I’ll find out this morning. They are charging $210 an hour labor. Our coach is 10 years old, so maybe time to sell it.

So it’s a Class A and you took it to a truck shop? You say they replaced the brake pads and the rotors? Brake rotors? Did they actually take the old bearings out and reuse them? Races as well? And they knew one was bad?

I learned years ago while working in a full service gas station that anytime a brake rotor is replaced, both inner and outer bearings and races should be replaced also. And if I told a customer that a bearing was bad (if we only had to resurface the rotor), and they told me not to replace it, I would ask them to sign a liability waiver.

Not knowing anything else, I’d say you got a half ass job for more than full price. They should replace all the failed parts at their expense and reimburse the tow.

How many miles on the coach.

What is documented? As to what was said they will claim you told them not to replace. You need to prove otherwise. Oral communication is two sided she said he said if it is not recorded.

10 years old, is this the first time the bearings were removed and looked at? Lubricants and seals have an effective life span.

Was just contacted by the garage, they have to replace the new seals they installed and I asked them to make sure and check the bearings.

If that was done at a international dealer I can tell you if they knew the wheel bearings were bad, they have to inform you of the unsafe issue and if you decline that repair you have to sign a release of liability before you can drive it off there lot, bad wheel bearings can cause a loss of the wheel, steering not to mention the damage done to the spindle, new shoes

No way that is possible with a properly installed correct seal for the application

Something is rotten here

Does the 2018 Thor Quantum PD31 E-450 Engine Gas have Wheel Bearings that should be serviced?

Service Advisor said no Wheel Bearings on my Class C

Interesting that the Service Advisor said there were no wheel bearings to be serviced on my Class C Thor Quantum just Travel Trailers. I'll check my Ford Manual befor I call her back with my findings. Thanx

The probably meant to say that they do not service wheel bearings on the Ford chassis. Your front wheels have bearings, most likely serviceable (vs. sealed like a lot of cars these days).

Thanx, Probably so as on their Recommended Services sheet they list Wheel Bearing Repack-Towables.
