I've had a Ranger for the last 6 months and it's great for all of the reasons you have mentioned. I do however dislike the weight. It's a bit heavy and sometimes a pain when I'm trying to sling it around in my storage compartment. Otherwise, works fabulously in my humble opinion as both a smoker, griller and griddler. (Yes, just made up that word)

I was on a live aboard dive boat 100 miles offshore of Australia, They said special dinner tonight. Shrimp on the barbie. Looking forward to it all day. I was so disappointed when I saw their barbie. A large Blackstone type griddle. This is frying not bbq! PERIOD! A great tool for frying a large breakfast. But If I want to BBQ I want a real gas grill (Weber) or smoker.

Just like "mechanical wrenching", the tool you use depends on the job at hand. When traveling in the motorhome, I cook exclusively. We plan a menu beforehand and stock the fridge, freezer and pantry accordingly.
Upcoming trip we have whole chicken in cast iron dutch oven, baked potatoes, spinach artichoke pasta, assorted vegetable dishes, bison burgers... and of course bacon, eggs, sausage, hash browns for breakfast. I think we even have tuna melts one day for lunch.
So all that takes a grill, griddle, Dutch oven, pasta pot and various pots & pans. Gotta have variety!!

Since this turned out to be a longer than expected and interesting thread I use my same Olympian SS grill from many years ago and also a griddle for breakfast and other items that works well on a flat surface
Also have a cast iron dutch oven and a lodge pan on board for other items
At home I use pellets or a griddle or both and the grill below is working out very well, has it all covered
The only downside is the size but luckily plenty of room

I have watched quite a few of these posts where folks just "loved" the new item they "had" to rush out to buy only to come back and tell us later how bad the item was.
Me, I got one of those 17" Blackstone Griddles before it became popular with the RV-set. I initially used it when cross-countrying on my Goldwing Trike while towing the smaller Aspen pop-up camper. I used it in conjunction with a $17 WM grill. Both run off my 5 lb propane tank.
When I got my RV I transferred most of my cooking gear from the camper. I rather plunk my grill and griddle on the campground picnic table, hook up my "christmas tree" to the 5 lb propane tank with propane lantern on top and the grill and griddle on the lower fittings and enjoy the outdoors we all professed to enjoy when we bought our RV. Keeps from stinking up the RV with cooking smells.

You can't make chicken salad out of chicken s**t! A grill is a grill, a griddle is a griddle and a smoker is a smoker...but only if you're smoking with wood (qualified opinion). So many manufacturers are tying to make the all-in-one (the ultimate sacrifice for real outdoor cooking) and it sounds great when you're packing out in a camper...but....go back to the beginning and start this reply over.

Use the right tool for the right job. Blackstone is the right tool for some of my cooking and my bbq is right for other cooking. That's why I have both
As for the wind blowing out the flame there's many fixes for that. Throwing it away instead of doing a $10 fix or buying a wind guard is ridiculous IMHO

Right tool, I use a charcoal grill, camp Dutch oven and a 17" Blackstone depending what I am cooking. I also had a problem with wind and the Blackstone, wouldn't blow out the flame but would dissipate the heat and not get up to temp. I bought the wind guard for my 28" Blackstone at home and made one for the 17".
Had problems with wind blowing the heat away on the Dutch oven so made a little ring that circles the DO and keeps away the wind. Jim.

Would you happen to have a picture of the wind guard you made? We love the BLACKSTONE but last camping trip the wind was so strong couldnt use it since it wouldnt get up to proper temperature.

Don't have a picture but I used aluminum flat stock similar to what "halfprice" used only I used hooks to go over the ledge of the griddle. That way I can use them or not. Made the hooks out of some copper wire I had laying around, simple and pretty crude but it works. Jim.

Total garbage.

Sounds like you got a defective Blackstone. I guess defects are something I better keep an eye on.

Defective, hardly. Lot of folks making wind shields for Blackstone’s.

The Coleman tailgate grill was a waste of $250. Takes around 20 mins to get up enough to cook a few chicken sausages.

Traeger has entered the market
Went to my local ACE to get some drip pan liners for my smoker and while there the grill specialist showed me a couple new accessories on the market. He also showed me the new entry into the flat top market which is a Traeger. Totally enclosed fire box with no chance of wind effect on the flame.
I plan on doing some additional research over time.

Wish I have the room to carry all that sfuff to cook with. Since 2004 I ve gone from a Weber Baby Q to a Weber Q1200.Re move the regulator Add an adapter and a quick connect nipple and I connect to the onboard propane. Preheat on high for 15 minutes gets to 525 degrees. Never had wind blow out. If I need to roast or bake, I use an aluminum pan with an oven rack If I need to fry, I use a $7 grill mat. I’m never at a campsite long enough during the day the smoke something Anyway, this fits in one compartment.
